Our visit to London included a trip to the British Museum, where I visited the Aztec exhibition, whilst my daughter made a mosaic. One of the first things that I found out on entering the exhibition was that the ‘Aztecs’ should really be referred to as the Mexica, and it seems that ‘Montezuma’ is now called Moctezuma.
Although it isn’t a real creature, I was very taken by the stone bird pictured above. This carved object, which was about the size of an armchair, was rather impressive, even though the purpose for which it was made was very grizzly. The bowl on the right of the picture was where human hearts would be placed when the Mexica carried out ritual human sacrifices.
On a slightly less gruesome note, I accompanied my daughter as she plucked up courage to go trick or treating for the first time. As we strolled around the streets of Hemsworth, I could hear the calls of redwings coming from overhead. I haven’t noticed the calls very often during the day recently and it seems that redwings do like to move around at night. The sky was clear that evening and there was a bright Moon, which might be a reason why birds might have been on the move.
